The session explored my journey in the open source ecosystem, particularly in the Python and Django communities. I highlighted key learnings from my leadership roles in PyLadies Ghana, PyCon Africa, DjangoCon Africa, sharing practical strategies and resources for building and sustaining technical communities. The talk resonated strongly with attendees across Latin America and globally, particularly those navigating similar challenges in community building and helped them rethink how they support and scale community efforts, especially with available resources.
I led a virtual talk aimed at introducing participants to the world of open source, providing practical steps for participating in Hacktoberfest. Attendees gained practical guidance on how to start contributing during Hacktoberfest, how to find beginner-friendly projects, and how to leverage the experience for skill-building and career growth.
I shared my journey of discovering and thriving in open source through the Django community from becoming a coach/mentor after being a mentee. I walked the audience through my early beginnings with Django Girls, and the life-changing opportunities that came from engaging with Django and Python communities. The talk served as a blueprint for aspiring developers, especially from marginalized backgrounds, to see the Django ecosystem as an accessible and empowering space.
I delivered this talk virtually to the PyClub AAMUSTED community to introduce students and early-career professionals to the world of open source. The talk covered the definition and ethos of open source software, common myths surrounding contributions, the diverse ways individuals can contribute beyond code. I shared resources on how they could get started, including Python projects looking for contributors. The talk demystified open source for newcomers and empowered participants to see themselves as valuable contributors regardless of their technical background.
